Our Lodge leadership visits other Lodges every so often to help improve our own program. It’s one of the best parts about being a Lodge leader. It’s a great learning experience and many parts of our program have been adapted from other Lodges.
During the weekend of October 30 – November 1, a few of our members went to visit Skyuka Lodge in SR Section 5. Skyuka holds their Lodge events at Camp Bob Hardin in Saluda, North Carolina, located in a beautiful area in the western part of the state. Skyuka was holding their annual Fall Fellowship weekend and offered us great hospitality.
Their weekend was much like our Fall Gathering weekends, including a Friday movie night, Quest for the Golden Arrow, and cheerful service projects. The Lodge theme for the weekend was “Halloween,” as it was Halloween weekend. Camp and the dining hall was decked from top to bottom in festive decorations. Each Chapter participated in the Lodge’s overall theme in different competitions like costume and pumpkin carving.
Quest for the Golden Arrow was the highlight of the weekend. Our Lodge leaders joined forces with the SR Section 5 leadership to make one quest team. We made a great team and won the quest. Stephen won us archery, his score was “1”, as in he only hit the target once. Tyler won us the relay. Tug of war was a group effort, see the video below.
The tennis ball and arrow throwing portion of quest was not our best run, with a score in the negatives. The final portion was ultimate frisbee. I’d love to report that we won this hard fought competition. We came close to winning with the other team beating us by one.
The evening consisted of a great dinner with the presentation of their newest Brotherhood members and Vigil recipients. The ending ceremony was one that every Lodge should strive to do at least once a year, a Broken Arrow Ceremony. The faces on the Skyuka brothers was one of great remembrance and sympathy for their fallen camp ranger.
This Lodge visit is one to remember and we hope to implement many new ideas in the coming year. From all us in Occoneechee Lodge, we want to thank Skyuka Lodge for being such great hosts and we look forward to seeing some of you at one of our Lodge events in the future.
