The Ordeal

The Ordeal

The induction ceremony, called the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership in the Order. The entire experience is designed to teach significant values.  All candidates must complete the Ordeal within 18 months of their election or nomination.

When

The Ordeal is offered on the following dates:

2024

  • SPRING INDUCTIONS – May 17-19, 2024
  • FALL FELLOWSHIP – September 20-22, 2024

Check-in for the Ordeal will be at the Administration Building, from 5 PM to 7:15 PM.  The weekend events begin promptly at 7:30 PM.  Late arrivals are unfortunately not permitted. The Ordeal weekend ends Sunday Morning, official pick up times will be sent out before events via email.

The Ordeal Schedule is determined by the Lodge Executive Committee during Lodge Leadership Development in November of each year.

Where

The Ordeal is held at Camp Durant on the Occoneechee Scout Reservation in Carthage, NC

Notes for GPS Users – 4637 Old Carthage Rd is the address for Camp Reeves.  Camp Durant is approximately 1 mile east on the same road.  Look for the OA Event signs to guide you.

Registration

Pre-registration is required for all members, at all events, including Ordeal Candidates.  This helps us with meal planning and to ensure that there are enough materials for all new participants. The event cost is $50.00 for Ordeal candidates, which includes event fee, Ordeal Sash, membership flap, Lodge Dues (valid until the end of the Ordeal year) and Brotherhood sash which can be earned 6 months after. A $10 late fee is assessed for those registering less than one week prior to the scheduled weekend.

What you need to bring

Pack for this event like any weekend camping trip.  Bring a tent, ground cloth/tarp, sleeping gear, rain gear, full uniform for your induction ceremony and work clothes for service projects during the weekend. You need to bring a BSA medical form, parts A & B only, it can be found here. You do not need any cooking gear as all meals are provided during the weekend. Please remember to stop for food as you head to camp. Dinner will not be served Friday evening.

What comes after?

Attend your monthly Chapter meetings to learn more about the Order and how you can best serve your Troop, District, and Council.  After 6 months of active membership in the Order, an Ordeal member can advance to Brotherhood membership.
