Many great ideas, from awards to new committees, are hashed out at Lodge Executive Committee meetings. What keeps order during these meetings? Until recently, there was no way of doing so other than a loud booming voice. However, during the January meeting, Glenn Parler presented a beautifully beaded gavel to Lodge Chief Gray Barnhill. Glenn Parler, a well known expert in Native American crafts, hand beaded the gavel and presented it to Occoneechee Lodge on behalf of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Having kept order in the courtroom, the gavel will now lend its weight to the Lodge Executive Committee meetings, signifying the importance of these leadership meetings. Continued use of the gavel will embody its practicality of helping to maintain parliamentary procedure, as well as its symbolic meaning of fairness and order.
